The Division of Code Compliance is responsible for the enforcement of zoning, housing and nuisance codes as set forth in the codified ordinances of the City of Sandusky. The division inspects complaints, obtains warrants, and addresses structures and properties which are not in code compliance. In addition, the division is responsible for the Rental Registration & Inspection Program and Transient Rental Program.

Noxious Weeds & Grass

Noxious weeds and grass that are eight inches or higher violate Section 531.07 and 531.08 of the Codified Ordinances of the City of Sandusky. Property owners and occupants are required to remove weeds/grass that are in violation. This applies during the growing season as defined as March 1 – October 31 of each calendar year.

Properties found to be in violation of Ordinance Section 531.07 will be sent a written notice advising them of the violation. This notice will further advise that all weeds/grass of a height of eight inches (8") or higher must be cut down and removed. Failure to comply with this notice within five (5) days from receipt of the notice will result in the City causing such weeds and grass to be cut and removed. Such cutting and removing shall be at the owner's expense.

Fee Schedule for Cutting/Removing Weeds/Grass

  • $45.00 per hour per employee – Labor Charge
  • $100.00 per hour per piece of equipment – Equipment Charge
  • Dump Fees
  • $100.00 – Administrative Fee

Only one notice per calendar year is required for a lot or parcel.

The property owner is given 30 days to pay the invoice. If the invoice goes unpaid the cost to abate the noxious weeds and grass along with an administrative fee of $100.00 will be assessed to the property taxes.

Request for Appeal – Grass/Weed Cutting  
An appeal must be filed in writing to the City Manager or his/her designee within 10 days of the abatement or the assessment of the abatement, whichever occurs last. This appeal must be turned into the Division of Code Compliance.

Properties found to be in violation of Ordinance Section 531.08 notice to owners of vacant parcels of land (land which contains no buildings) and/or owners of vacant properties (properties which contain buildings or structures, however the buildings or structures are unoccupied) shall be by the annual publication only, said owners shall not be given the additional one-time written notice as stated in 531.07. Such cutting and removing shall be at the owner's expense.

24 Hour Boulevard Nuisance Abatement
Containers for solid waste, garbage, refuse and/or other discarded materials, or recyclables, may be placed upon a curb for curbside collection no earlier than 6:00 pm on the evening prior to the scheduled curbside pick-up. Containers must be removed no later than 8:00 pm on the day of curbside pick-up.

Properties found to be in violation of Ordinance Section 955.15 which is found to have any garbage, trash, debris, or other refuse in or on the boulevard or public right of way shall be declared a nuisance and may be immediately abated so long as the annual notice is published in a newspaper of general circulation for the City of Sandusky. Only one publication per calendar year is required for a lot or parcel. No additional notice of violation will be given. Such abatement of any garbage, trash, debris, or other refuse will be at the owner’s expense.

Trash Zones

The City of Sandusky is not a single trash hauler city. Residents are responsible for acquiring trash hauling services.
