The Law Department is dedicated to providing the highest caliber of legal advice, counsel and representation to the City Commission, City Manager, Department Heads, staff and by doing so, to the public. The Law Department recognizes the need to carry out its responsibilities with commitment, respect, humility and the self-sacrifice of personal goals.
The Law Director and Assistants act as legal advisors to, and attorneys and counsel for, the City Commission, the City Manager, Department Heads and all of the municipality’s staff in matters relating to their duties consistent with Section 17 of the City Charter. In addition, the Law Department provides legal advice to all City Boards and Advisory Committees.
The Law Director and Assistants shall prosecute criminal cases in the Sandusky Municipal Court. The Law Director and Assistants shall give written legal opinions when requested by the City Commission, City Manager, or the head of any department or office upon questions of law involving their respective powers and duties. The Law Director and Assistants shall perform all other duties required by the City Charter, the general laws of the State of Ohio and all Municipal Ordinances.
The Law Director’s responsibilities include:
Serves as general legal counsel to the City Manager, City Commission and all City Departments, boards and commissions.
Preparation of ordinances and resolutions for City Commission.
Preparation of wide variety of legal documents for all of the City’s internal departments.
Gives legal advice and prepares legal opinions on questions of law posed by city officials in their official capacity.
